Some would say that the venue for the Beach On The Track New Year’s Eve party is what really makes the event happen. Phakisa Racetrack, which is just a few kilometres outside Welkom was the perfect host.
VIP guests and patrons looked picturesque amid the white furnished marquee and over-the-top table decorations. And apart from the endless (until after midnight) supply of Moet, there were tall boys of Belverde Vodka.
Lucy Kenny, the communications manager for the bubbly brand, Moet was also present to usher in the New Year. I wasn’t a bit surprised to see the guests at this NYE event look smashing; after all, we had to enter the New Year looking good. Among the VIP crowd were Model Lu Afrika, TV personalities and event MC’s Boitumelo Thulo (Boity) and Lerato Kganyago – would they ever miss an event? – PSL soccer player Katlego Mashego, tabloid fodder Kenny Kunene and Blogger and Entertainment writer Lelo Boyana. Artist billed on the line-up who also took time to relax in the VIP area included Ofm DJ, Shaxe Khumalo, Lulo Café, local DJ Fantas, kwaito artist Kabelo Mabalane and Lebogang Mothibe, better known as Shuga Smax.
I love his personality and presence but I was disappointed with Shuga Smax’s performance (and jumosuit he wore). I think it is great that his music speaks to the masses, his stage presence didn’t flatter at all.
Other artists who outdid themselves were Teargas who performed classics as well as those from their current almbum, Num8a Num8a, whilst Kabelo Mabalane took us a few decades back with some kwaito towards the end of the night. Ofm’s Shaxe Khumalo whom we all know as a DJ and presenter managed to fit in a second set shortly after midnight. My verdict on his hip hop sets? Not bad at all, in fact, I loved it.
The food, which included chicken livers, cocktail rolls with bacon rosemary mashed potatoes as starters was delicious. The main course of Braaised meat, green salad and pap was a tad disappointing judging from the appetising starter. But because with the entertainment and VIP deck was as the best hangout spot, people drank, chatted and danced until dawn.
Beach On The Track festivities continue today with the Metro FM Lounge by the Lake. One can expect performances from Moneoa, Ringo, Kabomo and Maxhoba. Ironically, it does not take place at a lake, but at the Phakisa Racetrack. We shall pretend there’s a lake.
