A beast in its own right. Toshiba Satellite L850

Just when the Ultrabook rash was fully spread, Toshiba went and reminded us about the ever escalating world of the portable notebook PC’s. This chunky number reminded us on why we actually moved onto the Ultrabook scene, the weight and size is enormous.

Our silver L850 we had for review came running on the Core i5 – 2470M CPU and 2.50GHz with 4 GB of RAM. Luck was on our side as this one came bundled with the Windows 8 preview release.  With the microphone and headphone jacks, USB 3.0 ports (x2), HDMI, Gigabit LAN, VGA and an exhaust vent all placed on the right and on the left hand side houses the DVD writer, a USB 2.0 port and the charging port.

Overall these features make the L850 run superbly, with amazing display accompanied by the Blu-ray player gives it an awesome finish. At first glance and feel the L850 comes across as  hard, chunky and just another plastic ensemble, but inside we were greeted by a very comfortable island-style keyboard with a large, highly responsive track-pad and its also large dedicated buttons that you surely cannot miss.

Pleasure comes as both the keyboard and track-pad are highly responsive with plenty of space to rest your palms on, so if you type a lot – go and get it!

Still, nitpicking aside, the L850 isn’t meant for the freelance writer tapping out columns in a coffee shop. Rather, it’s a potent and portable device meant for those who require intensive computing power. And intense it is. To test out its Bluetooth 4.0 we paired it with the Samsung Galaxy Note and shared music and image files in an instant.

The design on the L850 feels a bit old and at a norm. We’ve had multiple notebooks looking alike and here Toshiba should step its game up. The glossy finish irritates as it is prone to scratches and attracts fingerprints. But not to be alarmed as it also comes in a premium brushed aluminium metal surface.

The Satellite L850 is available in four colours (glossy black, sliver, red, and blue) from R8 499 (Incl VAT). For stockist and additional information contact Mustek on (011) 237 1000
