Message of Condolence

It was with grave sadness that we learnt of the passing on of Mr Anele Makhwelo, the boxer who lost his life after participating in the MACUFE 2011 Boxing Tournament. On behalf of the Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the Provincial Government, the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr Dan Kgothule, wishes to extend his most sincere condolences to the Makhwelo family.

The loss of such a young, talented and aspirant boxer is in deed a tragedy and hard to comprehend. We are aware that Mr Makhwelo was a committed athlete. We mourn his passing as a shock because he lost his life as a result of what he loved to do most, boxing. It is always a sad moment to witness such promising talent lost in an instant. We know the challenges of different sport codes and it is inevitable to fathom what can go wrong when sport athletes enter their field of domain.

We commend the dedication of Mr Makhwelo to the sport of boxing. We hope that his life and commitment to this sport will not deter others but will form a basis from which we can make the sport of boxing safer.

We wish the family, friends and associates of Mr Anele Makhwelo strength and solace during this time of bereavement.

May his soul rest in peace.
